Travel gives you perspective. You learn about the world too. When I first started sailing as a yachtsman, I said, “This is so much fun, so much fun.” Traveling for work seems like fun and you take pictures out of the airplane window. After a while—five, six, seven years—what seems to be happiness is having pillows and a dog and just being at home.
I’ve spent a lot of time traveling and I still love it. I love the South of France, but not because it’s so beautiful or because it’s where everyone wants to see and be seen. It’s just so beautiful. It sounds like a myth. Obviously I have also spent a lot of time in the Caribbean and I can say that the British Virgin Islands are unmatched for their beauty. St. Barts is also very special.
The first time I ever traveled was when I visited my relatives in Texas. My first trip that gave me travel sickness, however, was during spring break from college when I went to Puerto Rico for seven days. Those were the best seven days of my life.
My first destination is Lake Tahoe during the summer. I feel like it’s like the Caribbean with clear blue water, but you’re surrounded by alpine trees. I think the difference is going to be pretty amazing. I went to DC last week, which is a beautiful city. There are monuments and statues and it is very developed, but it is still a city.
Rapid fire
Window, middle, or aisle seat?
It is completely a window. A complete window. It’s never in the middle.
Window shade up or down?
I roll up the windows to take off, and I think sometimes it annoys some people because you shine the light. But I don’t care how often you fly, it’s still amazing to fly 30,000 feet in the sky. It’s not a feeling you get every day. I never lose my respect and appreciation for seeing the world from that perspective. And as soon as the seat belt light comes on, I turn it off.
Pack light or overpack?
Pack the light. As the years went by, I only had a suitcase. For two years, I didn’t know which country I was going to the next day or how long I would spend there. So I called into my packet. Remember, I always went to places on the beach where the boats would be, in warm weather, a beachy resort. I was always looking for something light, flexible, wearable, wearable, versatile. And who doesn’t like shopping? A parking light gives you a reason to buy.
A popular way to pass the time is by plane
I’m always ambitious and I think, okay, this is the time I’m going to check my phone and delete old stuff, or I’m going to be ahead of my taxes this quarter, or I’m going to go. answer all those emails. Never. I always buy a cocktail, watch a movie, and hopefully go to sleep. Every now and then, I bring my big tote with all my pens and my planner and printer and they never get affected.
The biggest game to go
I hate it, hate it, hate it when you’re in the baggage claim and people are walking up. You never know in which order your bag comes out. What if my bag comes out first and you’re on your way? Everyone should stand on all fours, and you only approach the belt when you see your bag and step back.
The biggest fear of travel
My biggest trips—and this used to happen, although it doesn’t happen that often anymore—is when you’re traveling and your bank sees that you’re overseas and you’re going to buy something,’ and refused. I’m like, no, no, no! You have to call the bank and you are embarrassed, but for no reason. Also lose your passport or ID and get caught, or get sick.
Your favorite snack
My favorite snack is champagne or rosé, because everyone loves it at the airport. It has no law. You can order a glass of rosé at 11am and no one will judge you.
Order a drink on the plane
I usually do what’s called Skinny Bitch; it’s vodka-Diet Coke. I want something strong to fall asleep.
